Reality of the musical baroque aera was cruel for ambitious female composers: They were
collectivly excluded by law from a professional musical career. There were only few possibilities for brave women to bypass these laws... An existance as courtesan, nun or monarch allowed some few women to escape this forced reality and live their artistic dreams.
Because of this composition ban for women only few works by female composers were passed on to today's audiences and musicians. The nun Isabella Leonarda, the courtesan Barbara Strozzi and the highly gifted Elisabeth Claude Jacquet de la Guerre, who was educated as composer at the court of Louis XIV, are three of these rare examples. The „First Lady“ Anna Amalia von Preussen, born in Berlin as the 12th child of Wilhelm I. and Queen Sophie Dorothea, is one of the few outstanding members of the ruling dynasties of her time who devoted herself to composing and collecting music.
These four exemplary and impressive personalities can be viewed as emancipatory pioneers for following generations of female instrumentalists and composers.
